Sunday Afternoon Social

MATT C, BOX OF KITTENS and others at Loft 404, Sunday, March 14. Rating: NNNN

It’s become harder and harder in recent years for party promoters to find warehouse spots where they can get away with pounding bass all night long, so the folks at AlienInFlux and Box Of Kittens teamed up last year to take a different approach: a series of Sunday Afternoon Social parties all winter. Dancing to underground dance music while sunshine streams through the windows feels strange at first, but the vibes are so overwhelmingly positive that it’s no wonder the series continues to draw capacity crowds.

This edition’s headliner, Matt C, is a bit of a Toronto house music legend, starting his DJ career back in the 80s at RPM and then later helping open Industry Nightclub in the 90s. These days he’s mostly retired from the nightlife scene, so when he does occasionally perform, all the old-school heads make a point of catching him. His set focused on the more melodic and romantic side of his sound, but he kept the beats heavy enough to maintain a dance floor full of smiling partiers.
