TUPPER WARE REMIX PARTY at Lee’s Palace, Saturday, September 12. Rating: NNNN
It took a second for Tupper Ware Remix Party to get down to business at the release show for their EP Believe In Your Dreams — the travelers of space and time were on stage for a couple minutes while a technical hiccup got fixed — but it didn’t take them long to satiate the funk-thirsty crowd, launching into the night with the new record’s title track.
From there things escalated so quickly the Toronto band had to remind overzealous fans not to throw elbows. It was necessary thanks to a job well done: TWRP’s intergalactic 80s-inspired synth-rock, along with a rotating cast of special guests, accomplished its booty-shakin’ goal, with each song (such as fan favourites The No Pants Dance and The Hit) going out to “all the ladies.” If you weren’t in the mood to groove, extended instrumentals could seem a bit long, but those grooves should be expected at a TWRP show. On top of the raucous originals, they had a couple tricks up their sleeves: a Can’t Feel My Face/Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) medley was only topped by the finale of an emotional, fist-pumping cover of Don’t Stop Believin’.
