CROOKED STAR

CROOKED STAR 202 Ossington 416-536-7271 Rating: NNNNN

VIBE A small neighbourhood bar in the rapidly developing Ossington/Dundas area, it’s just about to celebrate its first year of operation. Most nights you’ll hear DJs, mainly playing rock, but the mandate is eclectic. Occasionally, you might catch live acoustic acts as well.

SOUND & LIGHTS It’s much more of a pub than a club, so there are no fancy lasers or intelligent lighting. The sound system is quiet, but at least it’s not distorted. The DJ booth, wedged in behind the bar, consists of two CD players and a turntable.

VALUE There’s no cover to get in, and a pint of domestic premium costs just under $6 — not incredibly cheap, but better than many of the newer bars in the area.

SPECIAL NIGHTS Tuesdays, they turn the lone turntable over to the clientele, who can rummage through the owner’s collection of vinyl or bring their own.
