CROSSTOWN

CROSSTOWN , 178 Bathurst (basement), 416-362-7677 Rating: NNNNN

VIBE A brand new medium-sized club brought to you by the folks behind Black Market Records, Crosstown aims to fill the void of underground dance-music-oriented venues. Expect international DJs spinning a variety of electronic music, as well as live acts. The look is minimal and down to earth — not a lot of flash, just the raw essentials.

PAST LIVES Most recently, this was the home of Healey’s, but before that it was infamous as the after-hours club Bassmint. It’s been gutted and bears only a passing resemblance to its former incarnations. The new hardwood dance floor is already many people’s favourite improvement.

BATHROOMS The aging facilities have also been fixed up, and the women’s washrooms have been completely redone. They’re still not glamorous, but it’s not really that kind of place.

VALUE Drinks are fairly reasonable ($5 for a pint of premium domestic), but you should expect a cover charge. Big-name international DJs will generally see you dropping about $20 at the door.
