When Priya Panda tells you her band plays “music with balls,” don’t think for a second she’s yanking your chain. The rivetting singer leads a hard rock unit called Diemonds, and they’re the epitome of Sunset Strip sleaze. If you need further assurance that they’re the real devil-horn deal, tales of Panda’s recent vacation will kill any doubts.
“I went on the Motley Cruise,” she recalls of a recent a four-day Metal-themed boat cruise from Florida to Mexico. “It was a cruise with Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Skid Row and Slaughter – the best four days of my life, if you will.”
The band, including bassist Gabe Hard Knox, guitarist C.C. Diemond and drummer Alan “The Yeti,” has been together in its current incarnation for about two years, playing the Bovine and other Queen West rock fixtures on a frequent basis.
But Panda sees Diemonds busting out of that mould, and with an upcoming American tour that includes shows in the hair metal capital, Los Angeles, and their NXNE showcase with Swedish buzzmakers the Oholics, signs are auspicious that she’s probably right.
“Toronto is an indie, arty kind of city, and it’s hard to find people who love loud guitars and partying,” she says. “We love the music we make. We play music that makes us want to bang our heads, and hopefully make others wanna bang their heads, too.”
