SAHIB SHIHAB Sentiments (Storyville)
Hugely underrated saxophonist/ flutist Sahib Shihab made some of the finest recordings in Copenhagen during the 60s, and this superb 24-bit remastered issue of his gorgeous Sentiments set from 1971 comes with the highly sought-after 1965 session with the Danish Radio Jazz Group originally on Oktav. Magnificent.
JAZZ TRAVELS (Hitop)
Some impressively funky jazz records were cut in Spain during the 70s, as the Hitop label's excellent Improvisto collections have shown, but with the Jazz Travels disc, compiler DJ Casbah 73 offers a much broader perspective, with dope selections from around the globe by such artists as Sebastiao Tapajos, Gerardo Batiz, Daniel Lencina, Celia and Luiz Eca.
ON THE SPOT A Peek At The 1960's Nordic Jazz Scene (Ricky Tick)
It wasn't just Sahib Shihab causing a stir on the Scandinavian jazz scene back in the day, as you'll discover from this enlightening sampler of the brilliant post-bop recordings made all over Finland, Sweden and Norway by groups led by Staffan Abeleen, Esa Pethman, Lars Lystedt, Christian Schwindt and others.
MODALALAMODE (Deja Vu)
While much of North America was suffering from an epidemic of fusion fever during the 80s, Italy was apparently abuzz with Coltrane-inspired modalmania, as can be heard on Paolo Scotti's dazzling collection of super-rare Italian indie jazz made by small combos like the Piana Valdambrini Sextet, Nuevo Sestetto Italiano and the great Idea 6.
READY OR NOT 2 Deep Jazz Grooves From The Radio Canada Archive 1967-77 (Do Right!)
The second volume of Do Right!'s Ready Or Not series presents even more amazing jazz recordings made in Canada for the CBC that have remained largely overlooked for decades. Billy Robinson's head-nodding Quebec On My Mind is a Quantic favourite, and you won't believe the way Toronto's own Bernie Senensky gets down on Beloved Gift.
