DJ Dopey

Rating: NNNNN

WHERE Tonight (Thursday, September 13), at the State Theatre (69 Bathurst), and then Friday (September 14) at the Cave of Kama Sutra Lounge (173 Eglinton East). September 23 he spins at Nathan Phillips Square as part of Manifesto.

WHAT “Old-school, party-rocking, anything-goes style with a touch of turntablism.” He’s pretty serious about the turntablism part he won the 2003 world champion title at the DMC competition.

WHY “Well, the movie Juice got me interested in the battle aspect of things, but I always used to listen to Mastermind on the radio and thought it was amazing. My older brother Ron also got into it for a bit, so I kinda just tagged along and eventually fell in love with it.”

WEIRDEST MOMENT “I had this gig in Mongolia where the police came into the club as I was DJing, came right up to the booth and turned all my faders down with no warning. I couldn’t understand any of the conversations going on, but the club told me to hold still. For about an hour nobody was allowed to leave, and eventually one of the club reps came up to my booth, pressed ‘Start’ on my turn-table, turned up the volume, and the party continued without any explanation of what had gone down.”
