EXTRA – A Selection Of Outstanding Electronic Music Videos

Rating: NNN

The Extra DVD comp of fairly recent (1999-2004) promo clips created for electronic and sample-based songs (by RJD2, Felix da Housecat, Leftfield & Roots Manuva, Phon.o, DJ Shadow, Funkstörung, Munk with James Murphy, Black Strobe and others) is a worthwhile venture considering the collection could’ve accurately been subtitled “Videos too adventurous to be shown on MuchMusic.” The absence of lyrical content in most songs seems to free up the directors to explore more creative concepts involving novel narratives and clever image manipulation (time-lapse photography, animation effects, etc) that have nothing to do with four guys playing instruments onstage or hired women shaking ass. The long version of Laurent Garnier’s The Man With The Red Face, shot by Siraj Jhaveri, which centres around the activity in a Bombay fast-food restaurant, stands out as a high-water mark of inventive booty-free video-making.
