Album reviews Music

Jennylee

The new solo project from Warpaint bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg was inspired by her love of dance and the idea of making music she could move to – reasons why she picked up the bass at 19. The songs indeed have a kineticism of their own: the often spooky, minimalist grooves cover a wide spectrum of potential types of movement, from contemporary-dance-appropriate slow burns (Blind) to 80s pop shuffles (Never).

The murky production sucks out some of the dynamics, but a few extra-spirited tracks push above the rest. Lindberg is at her best when she gets eerie on Bully, a claustrophobic creep of slinky bass and metallic guitar flourishes, and album highlight Riot, a dangerous-sounding, heavily percussive post-punk number. She achieves similar scares on White Devil, which sounds like a confusing, sweaty bad trip through a haunted mansion, complete with pained screams by the end.
