Weaves should be in good shape by the time their album release show at the Horseshoe happens in late summer. The Toronto four-piece will have played 50-odd shows across North America, the UK and Europe in support of their long-awaited self-titled debut LP, out June 17 via Buzz Records.
The group, founded in 2014 by lead singer Jasmyn Burke and guitarist Morgan Waters, is the latest local act to catch the ear of the music press in the U.S. and the UK. And as their exhaustive summer schedule indicates, they’re aggressively seizing the moment.
The music is difficult to describe succinctly, encompassing clanging and chaotic post-punk that sounds like it’s trying to bust its way out of a paper-bag pop framework on the back of Burke’s impassioned vocals and zany lyrics. They’ve mastered the tension between concerted songcraft and wild energy on tracks like Coo Coo, Candy and One More. If a nutshell descriptor is required, “super-fun” just about covers it.
Weaves’ LP release party at the Horseshoe is their biggest hometown show to date, and given that their last gig was at the Toronto Reference Library, a proper Weaves club gig on a Saturday night couldn’t be a more perfect way to cap off the summer.
