Kiesza

Toronto becomes a sportier version of itself during the next few weeks of Pan Am/Parapan Am Games insanity, so it seems only fit to delve into the athletic history of those performing at the event’s free and stellar music component, Panamania.

We checked in with Calgary dance-pop star Kiesza, who’s everywhere these days (she played Skrillex’s Full Flex Express tour last weekend). Catch her at Pan Am Park (100 Princes’ Boulevard) on Saturday (July 18), 6:30 pm, and at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday (July 19), 7:30 pm, just ahead of the Flaming Lips.

Any childhood sports-related misadventures?

When I started playing soccer at about age five, my coach had trouble getting me to stop doing cartwheels while running after the ball.

Were you ever an award-winning athlete?

I got a lot of gold medals from childhood soccer teams. I guess the closest I ever really got [to sports success] was being scouted to train for sailing in the Olympics when I was 15. I didn’t pursue that, though, as I would’ve had to move away from home and I wasn’t sure it was what I wanted to do.

What’s your favourite sport nowadays?

I still love sailing. It’s a deep passion of mine and will always be part of my life.

Which sport would your songs be the best soundtrack to?

Extreme sports.

What do you do to stay healthy and agile for performances?

It’s hard to get to a gym with my schedule, but I focus on strengthening my joints and keeping my stamina high on a daily basis. Core stabilization is really important for what I do, and daily stretching. That said, nothing is a better workout for me than a good capoeira class, so I go whenever I can fit it into my schedule.

Your Panamania shows are happening outdoors. Do you prepare differently for that type of show, or change your set list?

It all depends on how long a set I’m playing. I believe at Nathan Phillips Square you’re going to get my full show. That means a mix of the high-energy dance songs and some epic ballads!
