In the years since his 2006 debut, Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has emerged as one of the most influential figures in contemporary electronic music. The great-nephew of Alice Coltrane, Ellison seems to have inherited some of her freewheeling cosmic jazz attitude. He's one of the reasons Radiohead don't write pop songs any more, and Thom Yorke appears on FlyLo's Until The Quiet Comes (Warp, October 2) along with Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Laura Darlington and others. A woozy album that floats in a kind of dark dream state, it deserves all the hype it's getting. Anticipation is high for his gig at the Danforth Music Hall on October 13, with some speculating that R&B visionary the Weeknd might make an appearance, as he recently did in London, UK.
