GILLES PETERSON and MC EARL ZINGER with DJs PAUL E. LOPES and MIKE TULL at Roxy Blu (12 Brant), Friday (June 22). $18-$20. www.hot-stepper.com Rating: NNNNN
Gilles Peterson wasn’t kidding around when he named his BBC Radio 1 program Worldwide.
The records in the influential London DJ’s crate span the globe, from ultra-rare Black Forest fusion and funky Ethiopian 7-inch singles to deep Brazilian beats, techno tango records and new-school Philly soul.
All have a loose connection to jazz and soul, but Peterson remains one of the planet’s foremost dance-floor tastemakers because he usually gets his hands on hip records before anyone else and never seems to let his mix get pigeonholed.
Expect the freshest in two-step, drum ‘n’ bass, groovy jazz and beyond at Peterson’s JVC Jazz gig Friday (June 22) at Roxy Blu, and don’t be surprised if there’s a crowd around the booth and fellow DJs taking notes.
