Who: GreenTaRA might be described as equal parts Ursula Rucker, N’Dea Davenport and Bahamadia. This steadily rising BC native’s organic artistry has been growing since 1996, and she’s now at the top of her game. She’s toured four continents independently, acoustic guitar in tow, invading the minds of the unsuspecting with sonic shrapnel bombs of positivity.
Why: She offers a confident mix of funk, soul, R&B and rap on her sophomore disc, Global Baby (Easy Bake), and her vibe is needed more than ever in genres where the healthy feminine perspective is lacking. The music is magnetic and her personality compelling. Her performance for the UN in New York City attests to that.
Buzz factor: Her infectious charm and gifted musicianship, previously heard at the Cameron in summer 2007 with Afrakaren Niles and Tuku, shouldn’t remain a secret much longer.
