HEAVEN at The Silver Dollar. Friday, June 19. nxne.com Rating: NNNN
Heaven might be Toronto’s best-kept shoegaze secret. Potentially grating to the uninitiated, the relative-newcomers’ wash of noisy treble only relented a few times to allow their mysterious front-woman’s angelic voice to creep through.
While more of her vocals would have been welcome in the mix, the rest of the band-comprised of two guitarists and a drummer-created intricate, reverb-drenched soundscapes, layered on top of creative tom and snare patterns. Falling more at the arty-punk end of the shoegaze spectrum, Heaven have tons of potential. If you long for the days of Ride and My Bloody Valentine, you should find lots to like here.
