Hot Tickets

Rating: NNNNN

The Bellrays, Shikasta

• Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor West), tonight (Thursday, October 20)

You can always count on the Bellrays to put on a kickass show, but the main attraction here is still the soulful belting of Lisa Kekaula, whom some people might know from her collabo with Basement Jaxx. See feature, page 54.

Ernest Ranglin

• Hugh’s Room (2261 Dundas West), Friday and Saturday (October 21-22)

Admittedly, the tickets are pricey for this one, but it’s not every day that you get to see one of the architects of reggae music work his guitar magic in an intimate Toronto club.

Holy Fuck, No Dynamics

• Mod Club (722 College), Friday (October 21)

In two weeks, Holy Fuck will be releasing a brand new recording, but you really need to see them play off each other improvisationally to get the full Holy Fucking experience. Damn.

Four For Fall tour

• Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor West), Saturday (October 22)

This might be your one and only chance to see low-key rootsy crew the Fembots and prairie rawk hooligans Whitey Houston on the same bill. Luke Doucet and spazz-rockers Shout Out Out Out Out come along for the ride.

Freakwater

• El Mocambo (464 Spadina), Saturday (October 22)

Reanimated country-folk combo Freakwater show off the songs from their great new Thinking Of You (Thrill Jockey) album – sadly, sans Califone. See feature, page 58.

The Clientele, Annie Hayden

• Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor West), Sunday (October 23)

If you can’t stand the sappy pop Liz Phair insists on singing at the Phoenix, head over to Lee’s, where London’s Clientele reconstruct 60s psych-pop through a Freudian filter. See Celebrity Spins, page 65.
