Peter Case CD release party, Alun Piggins & the Quitters
Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington), tonight (Thursday, October 18)
Most of Peter Case's shows have been of the solo acoustic variety, but with Alun Piggins and crew lending rockin' support, this CD launch promises to be a genuine party.
Wanda Jackson with the Rizdales
Cadillac Lounge (1296 Queen West), Friday and Saturday (October 19-20)
Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson returns for a two-night stand backed by the tastefully twangin' Rizdales. The Saturday-night show marks her 70th birthday, and if anyone can blow out all those candles, it's Wanda.
UNKLE with James Lavelle
Lee's Palace (529 Bloor West), Friday (October 19)
Even if most of UNKLE's recent recordings have been hugely disappointing, James Lavelle can still put on an entertaining show if the mood takes him. Here's hoping.
Ginny Hawker & Tracy Schwarz
Tranzac Club (292 Brunswick), Sunday (October 21), 7 pm
Although New Lost City Rambler Tracy Schwarz will be getting down Cajun-style with Swamperella at the Gladstone Saturday, his other show singing soulful mountain ballads with the amazing Ginny Hawker at the Tranzac is the one you really shouldn't miss.
New Pornographers, Emma Pollock
The Phoenix (410 Sherbourne), Sunday (October 21)
It's increasingly rare to see the New Pornographers with key members Neko Case and Dan Bejar. Since they're both slated to be on hand for Sunday night's Phoenix frolic, it promises to be a truly festive event worthy of silly party hats, streamers, Jäger shots and stranger hugs.
Little Brother, Evidence, Arabesque
Mod Club (722 College), Tuesday (October 23)
The Shad and Grand Analog double bill at the Mod Club Wednesday will be solid, but the hiphop show of the week is Little Brother's thowdown with Evidence, and don't count out opener Arabesque, who'll be spitting fiya! A hot one, for sure.
