This Week’s Must-See Toronto Shows: July 17 To 26

Shuggie Otis

Shuggie Otis’s comeback tour is swinging back through Toronto two years after the cult funk/soul musician re-emerged from a nearly four-decade hiatus to reissue his now-classic 1974 album, Inspiration Information.

The 61-year-old’s 2013 gig at the Phoenix attracted a crowd of grey-haired hippies and younger hip-hop heads who most likely discovered his prodigious guitar chops and cosmic funk and soul through hip-hop acts who have sampled his music over the years: Digable Planets, De La Soul, OutKast, Kanye West and J Dilla.

As reclusive funk showmen go, Otis has a much more low-key stage presence than, say, Prince or D’Angelo, but his musicianship and backing band are no less impressive. If you can’t make it to his show at Lee’s Palace on Monday, you can check out his first-ever live -album, Live In Williamsburg, which was recorded in 2013 and came out last year on Cleopatra Records.

At Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor West), Monday (July 20), doors 8 pm. $30, VIP $40 (includes meet and greet). rotate.com, soundscapesmusic.com, ticketfly.com
