LOSING TODAY FESTIVAL at the El Mocambo (464 Spadina), Friday and Saturday (October 12 and 13). $10. 416-968-2001. Rating: NNNNN

The Losing Today festival is proof that the language of swoon pop knows no borders. The two-night event running Friday and Saturday at the El Mocambo has a particularly twisted genealogy. Try to follow along.

It was launched by the Italian music magazine Losing Today. The zine and its Web site (www.losingtoday.com) cover all aspects of the international space rock scene. Despite being based in Rome, most copies of the magazine are sold in the United States.

This weekend’s event, the magazine’s first-ever festival, features 11 drone-happy, slow-rocking groups. Two are from the USA — Ariel Love Feed and Skywave — and the rest are from Toronto.

The story might be confusing, but at the very least the two nights out offer a good chance to see most of the city’s best fuzz-rock crews — like Kid Sniper, Raising the Fawn, Mean Red Spiders and the Russian Futurists — together in one place. The event starts at 9 pm and tickets are $10 each night. Bring earplugs.
