JUMPIN' JACK FROST with MYSTICAL INFLUENCE, EVERFRESH and I.N.S. at Turbo Niteclub (360 Adelaide West), Friday (September 7). 10 pm. $20. 416-372-4420.
World Cup fever is gripping Europe at the moment, and UK drum 'n' bass DJ Jumpin' Jack Frost has got it bad.
"The whole country is celebrating 'cause England just beat Germany five goals to one, so it's just madness. It's like the war, know wha' I mean," he yells into his cellphone over the roar.
Just back from a tour, he's talking to me from a friend's party where he's played a free gig, spinning old acid house to celebrate England's win.
"I keep it real, keep it gansta. That's what they say when I get on the decks here -- "Here comes Mr. Keepin' It Gansta.'"
OK, so he misuses American expressions. Frost knows his drum 'n' bass and is sure to please the crowd next Friday.
One of the few DJs to make his name on the decks as opposed to in production, he started DJing acid house in the late 80s and then moved to drum 'n' bass. His new mixed CD on Nude Recordings stands out from the piles of compilations for its superior track selection and mixing. Cutting his way through complex polyrhythms, he brings us back to the days when drum 'n' bass meant more then one style of beat.
"I was trying for that. I like New York house, trance -- I like all sorts of music -- and I wanted to make the CD for anybody, not just d 'n' b fans. Plus, I selected all those songs last November, so I had to make sure they would stand up. The way that CD is, it's like what I play live."
He promises to get the juices flowing at his T.O. gig.
"My label, V Recordings, is putting out all this Brazilian stuff right now. At the moment for me it's all samba samba, cha cha cha cha. Drum 'n' bass for me is all about sex right now, I'm trying to get that Masters at Work vibe in d 'n' b at this moment.
"When I come down next week, that's the vibe I'm going to be under. There's not going to be too much neaagh neaagh craziness. It's just going to be a bumpin' girly vibe -- ya know, that booty vibe."
"When I was young I lived in Miami for a year, so I'm really into that booty thing. You drop the 808 bass drum and shit, y'know wha' I mean. I'm also really into stuff like Rage Against the Machine, so I try to incorporate all that into what I do."
