Toronto will get a glimpse of the new Crystal Castles lineup when the reconfigured electronic duo hits the Hoxton in October.
Ethan Kath and Edith Frances – who replaced singer Alice Glass last fall after her acrimonious departure from the band a year prior – are gearing up to release CC’s fourth album, Amnesty (I), in August via Last Gang.
So far, what we’ve heard of the new material is not much of a departure. The songs they’ve released – Frail, Concrete, Femen and Char – feature heavily effected vocals, ravey beats and eerie melodies.
The group originally formed in 2004 and gigged at indie scene venues like Sneaky Dee’s and the Boat before blowing up internationally. They released the albums (I) in 2008, (II) in 2010 and (III) in 2012, all the while earning a rep for their intense stage show mainly thanks to Glass, who memorably performed with a crutch and a giant cast on her leg at the Coachella festival in 2010.
Kath and Glass appeared on the cover of NOW in 2008. In the accompanying feature, Kath said that as soon as he saw Glass perform with her old band Fetus Fatale, “I knew I could trust her and that I wouldn’t have to look over anything she does. Whatever she’d put on my tracks would be fine, and she’ll never write a clichéd lyric.”
In 2014, Glass tweeted that she was leaving the band and planning to release solo material. The two have since traded barbs in the press over who wrote what, and earlier this year Glass told Dazed & Confused she was “deeply miserable” during her time in the band.
“For the majority of my career I was conflicted,” she said. “I would go onstage and show this aggressive, angry side of myself. It was an expression of my frustration and desperation. It was a way for me to communicate what I was going through without having to explain anything offstage, because I didn’t want to be seen as vulnerable. It was a way to be confrontational when in my personal life I felt like my feelings weren’t respected.”
Let’s hope Frances fares better.
