Just announced: The Tragically Hip’s bittersweet tour

The Tragically Hip

Torontonians returned from the Victoria Day long weekend to the sad news that Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The Canrock legends made the announcement via social media on Tuesday, May 24. He was diagnosed in December.

“Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard,” reads the statement. “In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him.”

Downie’s neuro-oncologist, Dr. James Perry, told a press conference at Sunnybrook Hospital on Tuesday that the type of tumour Downie has, glioblastoma, is the most aggressive and common kind of brain cancer and is incurable. Downie has already undergone surgery and six weeks of chemotherapy.

Proving their fighting spirit, the band also announced an 11-date Canadian tour in support of forthcoming 14th album Man Machine Poem, saying that it “feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.”

Toronto fans have two chances to see the band: August 10 and 12 at the Air Canada Centre. Tickets go on sale Friday (June 3) at 10 am. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Sunnybrook Foundation.
