Just announced Toronto shows: ’70s-inspired teen duo The Lemon Twigs

The Lemon Twigs

Teenage pop duo Brian and Michael D’Addario are striking for a couple of reasons. First, they look like the love children of Beck and the Bay City Rollers and, second, at only 19 and 17, they make perfectly crafted pop-rock tunes in the vein of Big Star, Bowie and the Beatles.

Hailing from Long Island, the pair are multi-hypenate overachievers who’ve been making music for the better part of 10 years, encouraged by their musical parents, while moonlighting as child actors in TV shows and movies such as Law & Order and Sinister.

Auspiciously, their debut album as the Lemon Twigs came out on respected indie 4AD in October. Produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, Do Hollywood is heavy on waltzy melodies, sunny harmonies and proggy diversions that recall the analog glamour and excesses of 70s rock.

Despite the list of high-profile credits and influences, the group is very much in a nascent stage of buzz, and if their upcoming tour – including a January 23 stop at the Drake Underground (1150 Queen West) – delivers on the hype, they may be playing a bigger venue the next time around.

Doors 8 pm. $13.50. On sale Friday (November 18).
