Kanye’s breast effort

Degrassi alumni and up-and-coming rap star Drake, a recent signee to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label who has been covered in NOW here and here, has just released his debut video, directed by none other than Kanye West.

Best I Ever Had has already been blowing up as a single, and while some might dismiss it as a throwaway piece of pop-rap trash, it’s hard to deny that the simple hook has a habit of hanging around your brain for days if you’re not careful.

Simply attaching West’s name to the video is guaranteed to give it a bump in profile, but reaction to his first attempt at directing has been mixed to say the least. To sum up the concept, it’s five minutes of slow-motion bouncing boobs, and a cheeky subplot about Drake’s failure at turning his team of buxom babes into a winning basketball team.

It’s simple, silly, and possibly a clever satire of hip-hop music clichés, but when you browse the online reaction from fans it becomes evident that many people aren’t getting the joke. Half the reactions are deeply disappointed that there’s no attempt to literally interpret the lyrics, and some people seem almost offended that they decided to go the low-budget comedy route instead of the standard hot-cars-and-hot-chicks method.

On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that we’re just imagining the parody aspect, and maybe Kanye just thought to himself “breasts are great, what else do you really need in a video?”

We’re tending towards believing that it’s a mixture of the two possibilities. The simplicity and goofiness of the clip seem to be borrowed from the Spike Jonze school, which lends credence to the theory that he’s actually trying to do something smart. Having said that, Kanye is also probably hoping that it’s going to go viral with horny 16 year old boys, and judging from the early online response, it’s well on its way.

Regardless of the intent, it’s provoking debate and getting posted all over the place, which in an era when MTV and MuchMusic barely play videos anymore, is really the best you can hope for. [rssbreak]
