Local Spotlight: Emm Gryner

Rating: NNNNN

Who? Emm Gryner (piano, guitar, vocals).

WHERE? Tonight (Thursday, August 23) at Lee’s Palace.

SOUND? Piano pop.

key fast facts? Toronto singer/songwriter and occasional backup singer with David Bowie. Gryner’s new disc, Girl Versions, is an unlikely collection of covers. An update of an independently released cassette of the same name, the album features Gryner adding her laid-back piano treatments to songs like Fugazi’s Waiting Room, Ozzy’s Crazy Train, Blur’s Song 2 and Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar On Me, a cut that’s been given the nod by the British hair rockers. It’s entirely unexpected and often successful. Gryner releases the disc tonight at Lee’s.

IF YOURE INTO: Tori Amos.
