Lonesome Wednesdays no more

The Silver Dollar Room’s weekly bluegrass jam, High Lonesome Wednesdays, ends this week after two decades.

The night is anchored by bluegrass ensemble Crazy Strings (aka the Foggy Hogtown Boys), the current lineup of which features Chris Coole, Andrew Collins, Max Heineman, John Showman, Chris Quinn and Marc Roy, who will perform at the final gig.

“We had to pull the plug because it was rare that we were all in town at the same time,” Coole tells NOW. “Everyone in the band is so busy with other projects, so it was getting hard to maintain the momentum of the weekly gig.”

“After approximately 20 years, there is a sense of melancholy as we come to the end of something like this, but the night seemed to have run its course,” Quinn adds. “The band is not quitting performing, though 2016 is looking busy already.”

Founded by Stef Fantin, who died six months ago, and Dan Whiteley, the group has counted many out-of-town guests and local bluegrass up-and-comers among its players, including Joey Wright, Jenny Whiteley, Dottie Cormier, Victor Bateman, Brian Baron and John McNaughton.

The final High Lonesome Wednesday takes place November 18 at the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina). See listing.
