A change of scenery appears to be just what Montreal-based Toronto expat Mike Shannon needed. Slight Of Hand, his debut disc for Force Inc, showcases an individualist approach to deep techno. It’s musical enough to be accessible yet adventurous in its variety of sounds and rhythms, full of metallic washes, tiny clicks and bursts of noise and chunky bass lines. Those tired of the standard four-on-the-floor techno will be pleased to know that Shannon’s album veers off into weird, lopsided rhythms, clinking percussion and offbeat rhymes.
