More Proof, more mixtapes

MORE PROOF at the Drake Underground (1150 Queen West), Friday (January 14), 11 pm, $5. See listing.

To celebrate four years of eclectic dance parties, the More Proof collective of multi-hyphenate talented cool kids has produced a new mixtape premiering exclusively on nowtoronto.com.

Four On The Floor: More Proof 4th Anniversary Mix is both a retrospective and a teaser, blending new edits of crowd favourites from the monthly jams with choice Chicago house and buzz acts like Jamie Woon and James Blake.

Formed at a time when electro and French house acts were reverberating with college radio lovers, More Proof have since diversified from hard-edged house to incorporate deeper, more soulful sounds alongside dance-friendly pop/rock. This free-form approach is also reflected in the outfit’s programming: guest DJs and performers have included Boston’s Red Foxx, New York party starters Eli Escobar and Lauren Flax, and reluctant rapper Kid Cudi.

Co-founder Johnny Hockin hopes 2011 will be the year the scene’s local stars go global. Last year, Pilotpriest (aka Anthony Burns) gained blog notoriety when Kanye West mistook one his tracks for Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy score. This year, DJ Gingy (aka Brian Wong) gets a shot at international exposure with a release produced with collaborator Bordello for Tiga’s Turbo Records label.

“Their songs have quietly been in Tiga’s rotation for about a month now,” says Hockin. “Gingy has a distinct dark sound, but when he works with Bordello they get a really nice warehouse techno vibe. I’m happy it’s starting to resonate.”
