New Constellations to celebrate the Indigenous Next Wave at the Opera House: Just announced shows

The nation(s)wide tour closes in Toronto with Feist, Lido Pimienta, Weaves, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and much more

The Basement Revue and Revolutions Per Minute are teaming up for the New Constellations tour, a 13-city nation(s)wide celebration of the Indigenous Next Wave.

The tour finishes on December 20 at the Opera House and features a stacked lineup of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous musicians, artists and poets.

Out of the huge list of people taking part, Toronto has some major names already confirmed: Feist, Polaris-winner Lido Pimienta, Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg poet, author and songwriter Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Toronto indie rock band Weaves, plus Elisapie, Safia Nolin, Jeremy Dutcher and co-organizer Jason Collett (of Broken Social Scene).

If Collett and Damian Rogers’s Basement Revue is any indicator, there are sure to be some special guests and one-off team-ups. There’s a major focus on collaborations, both fostering and bridging communities.

“Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists rarely perform or create together, so this is an amazing opportunity to see what happens when they do,” says RPM’s Jarrett Martineau. “With where we are in this country’s history, that collaboration is more important than ever.”

That’s happening offstage as well as on, with a mentorship program designed to help upcoming Indigenous artists. Youth from across the country can submit music to be mentored by artists like Iskwé, DJ NDN (of A Tribe Called Red) and Pimienta.

December 20 at the Opera House (735 Queen East). Doors 7:30 pm. $25.
