Rajiv Thavanathan was dreaming of distortion pedals and humming amplifiers when he was in his former band, Five Blank Pages. In a word, he needed to rock. When it became clear that his bandmates in the mellow indie folk outfit didn't, he left in pursuit of volume.
"I was hearing something very different in my head that I wanted to get out," says the local guitarist about his new band, Oh No Forest Fires.
"I owed it to myself to work on a project that was really important to me."
With Adam Nimmo, Matt Del Buono and Brock Swanek, he began writing frenetic, high-energy, melodic songs. The nascent group clicked immediately and quickly released an independent full-length debut, The War On Geometry, last November.
"Both bands have moments of poppiness and themes of love. If you're a hopeless romantic like me, it'll always show up in songs no matter how much distortion you throw onto a track."
Geometry sometimes takes its cues from emo punks Moneen, whose frontman, Kenny Bridges, produced the full-length.
Says Thavanathan, "If you'd told 16-?year-?old Rajiv that he'd be recording with Kenny from Moneen, his favourite band at the time, he probably would've lost his shit. So it was really cool for 23-?year-?old Rajiv to be sitting in a room with this guy he looked up to."
