Over Yonder

YONDER with MANDIBLES at the Rivoli (332 Queen West), Saturday (December 6), 10 pm. $6. 416-596-1908.

The ink isn’t even dry on Yonder’s record deal with Sparks Music (Spiral Beach, the Priddle Concern) and frontman Zach Bennett is already making sacrifices.

A big reissue of their catchy, roots-tinged indie debut, Skywalk To Crescent Town, planned for early 09, has led Bennett to whittle his sprawling band down to a core quintet for touring. “Trying to rehearse as a nine-piece band that included both strings and horns was almost impossible,” he says.

“But fuck me, I’m still surrounded by great musicians.”

His new lineup includes local heavyweights Dean Marino (co-owner of Chemical Sound) on guitar and Todd Harrison (ex of Trucks Leaving, Theresa’s Sound-World) on keys and melodica.

Also set to shift for the label roll-out is the band’s moniker (which is being used by more than a few shotgun-toting redneck bands on MySpace). After this show at the Rivoli, Yonder will be reborn officially as Tin Star Orphans – a reference to the children of people killed by sheriffs in the Old West. Giddy up.
