New Year's Eve hit list
A DIRTIER NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY at Mercer Union (99 Sudbury). $25 advance, $35 before midnight, $40 after. www.mercerunion.org.
Art galleries aren't usually known for their wild parties, but this one should be good - hot New York duo DJ Ayres and Cosmo Baker are the headliners, fresh from a well-received gig a few weeks ago. They've also got a guest from Italy, SuperPeakNick , and an eclectic bunch of local DJs playing everything from rock to techno. Plus, they've got something called a Bass Bed.
ALIENINFLUX/PROMISE ANNUAL NYE JAM at Funhaus (526 Queen West, rear entrance). $33 advance, more at the door. firstname.lastname@example.org.
These events are always a lot of fun, as long as you can deal with a couple of hippie ravers here and there. Vancouver house hero Tyler "T-Bone" Stadius is headlining, along with former Montreal resident Noah Pred . The local support are all dependable performers and cover a wide range of electronic music throughout the night.
X-TEND at Boa-Redux (270 Spadina). $60 advance, more at the door. www.boa-redux.com.
Not everyone is up for a 36-hour party, but if you are you'll probably be at Boa-Redux for this massive event. David Morales , Demi , Tom Stephan , Chus & Cheballos , Cevin Fisher and Saeed Younan are on the long list of international talent alongside a longer list of local DJs. Of course, it'll have barely started by midnight, so this is more a place to hit sometime after the countdown.
No Regrets at Terra (rear of 219 Dufferin). $20 advance, more at the door. email@example.com.
Techno fans looking for something cool and intimate will want to check this out. The space is charming, and the evening promises to be a dancefloor-friendly combination of deep techno and weirdo house. If that sounds a little serious, don't worry - Dave Cooper and Sexi MC will be hosting classic house karaoke for the first part of the night, which should be silly, ridiculous fun. Chicago's Josh Werner and Marko Katic are the headliners.
MILK NEW YEAR'S EVE, VOL.8 at Una Mas (422 Adelaide West). $25 advance, more at the door. www.milkaudio.com.
There aren't many deep house NYE parties this year, but if you're happy with an all-local lineup, this one should satisfy your craving for soulful grooves. Milk residents Felix & Gani are joined by Jason Palma and Mike Sitchon , both reliable crowd-pleasers. This will be smaller and more intimate than many NYE events; if you're looking for a bigger deep house party, head down the street to Roxy Blu.
January 1 - the day after
NEW YEAR'S DAY AT THE Comfort Zone (480 Spadina). $40 advance, more at the door. 416-975-0909.
Legendary, infamous and kind of scary is the long-running morning-after-party at the Comfort Zone. Starting at 3 am, it'll last all day into Saturday night, when they'll close down to clean and then reopen Sunday morning at 6 am. Not for the faint-hearted, this will totally redefine what you think "partying hard" is. The DJ lineup includes their standard crew of locals who will be playing twisted, tripped-out and pounding house music. Your body will hate you.
