Although Warner may be unaware of the musical riches in its vaults, thankfully, the folks at the Collectors' Choice Music label understand the music-buying public's interest in 60s blues, folk and singer/songwriter recordings made for Elektra and have happily taken it upon themselves to reissue cult classics like Sonny Bono 's nutty-marvellous Inner Views, Judee Sill 's Heart Food and others at a cost well below Rhino Handmade's ridiculous list price. One of the more interesting titles in the latest crop is the Charles River Valley Boys ' Beatle Country, on which the Beantown bluegrass crew led by young mandolin-picking prodigy Joe Val twang up a set of Fab Four faves. Beatles fans might be surprised at just how well tunes like I've Just Seen A Face, And Your Bird Can Sing, Baby's In Black and What Goes On lend themselves to a banjo-backed bluegrass interpretation.
For all the great work the UK Soul Jazz label has done making available the incredible Studio One roots reggae recordings, it seemed like the many great instrumentals cut by Sir Coxsone Dodd 's killer house band, Sound Dimension - notably featuring Leroy Sibbles , Cedric "Im" Brooks , Ernest Ranglin and Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace - were being overlooked. But now suddenly there are two Sound Dimension comps out simultaneously: Soul Jazz's typically excellent Jamaica Soul Shake Vol. 1, as well as the equally snazzy Downbeat The Ruler instro collection, issued by Rounder 's Heartbeat subsidiary, which also includes first-class scorchers from Tommy McCook , Jackie Mitoo and the Brentford Road All Stars . Since there are only two crossover cuts, serious reggae fans will really need them both.
Since the Movement crew began leaving their rare jazz, Latin and funk recordings at home in favour of more conventional dance-floor fodder, the monthly Footprints parties have been the place to be for your rare groove fix. To get an idea of what you're in for at the next Footprints bash, set for the Rivoli Saturday (February 18), check out the fantastic fourth volume of the Footprints Sessions mix series assembled by DJ Stuart , Jason Palma , and General Eclectic boasting hard-hustling heat from the Upsetters , Willie Bobo , Erlon Chaves , Manu Dibango , Les McCann and Fela Kuti . Where else you gonna hear the Hykers ' tipsy take on Sly & the Family Stone and Boris Gardner one-upping Booker T & the MGs on the same disc? Grab it at Play de Record and get down.
