Deutsche dementia As I was playing DJ Format's fab Euröpean Vacatiön prog-funk mix at home, one fuzzed-out head-nodder in particular stood out: All Men Shall Be Brothers Of Ludwig, by Staff Carpenborg and the Electric Corona , from their insanely great Fantastic Party album on the budget-line Maritim label. Although Format was lucky enough to grab the LP for pocket change in a German flea market (probably because the sleeve looks like a James Last cocktail snoozer), copies of the exploito-psych masterwork now go for serious dough.
So thank Allen Voran and pals for reissuing it on the down-low so more brains can be bent by twisted thrillers like Stainy Heavy Needles and Let The Thing Comin' Up. As if that weren't enough, they've added a bonus track, Afro Rock, by Ken James & the Rockers , best known for Dixieland-style covers of Little Richard tunes. Heavy.
Boss Basso-Valdambrini Fans of hard-swinging 60s Italian jazz will be delighted to know that BMG Japan has reissued two early RCA label classics by the Jazz Messengers-inspired combos led by tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso and his trumpeter sidekick Oscar Valdambrini , namely The Best Modern Jazz In Italy 1962 and Walking In The Night, each of which goes for insane lira if you ever see them. Those more into the cerebral side of the Basso-Valdambrini sound should stick with the former, while dance-floor jazz fans need to grab Walking In The Night for Latin-flavoured bangers Lotar and Tea Time. The remastering job is superb, and the mini-LP cardboard sleeves are very stylish indeed. Atlantic soul Unearthed It's no secret that major U.S. labels consistently get their asses kicked in the reissue department by their associated operations in other countries and indie archival labels, but bless those diligently digging folks at Rhino for at least attempting to keep up with the vault-digging efforts of the rest of the world. Their two 16-track Atlantic Unearthed comps split into Soul Sisters and Soul Brothers uncover a few previously unreleased gems by Wilson Pickett , Margie Joseph , Donny Hathaway , Dee Dee Warwick , Percy Sledge , Bettye Swann and Arthur Conley , although the best stuff here is the frequently reissued "rarities" like Otis Clay 's searing Pouring Water On A Drowning Man, James Carr 's uplifting Hold On and Irma Thomas 's hard-hitting Full Time Woman. Hopefully, these are just the first two discs in a 20-volume series - they missed a lot. Fresh Frisina Everybody knows that DJ/producer Gerardo Frisina has an exceptionally deep record collection and any mix disc that bears his name has the potential to be a mind-blower. Rio-Evolutions Vol. 2 (DejaVu) falls far short of a life-changing experience, but it's still packed with some killer Brazilian and Latinesque jazz jams, old and new, retooled for dance-floor-filling purposes by Frisina and pals like Nicola Conte and Yukihiro Fukutomi . More tracks from Frank Hernandez , Claudia and Joe Pacheco , please.
