The global growth of the deep funk scene has been great for people putting out reissue collections, but there's also a downside. It's now much more difficult to find uncomped 60s and 70s vinyl obscurities, and even when they're located, the higher market prices of rare funky vinyl and corresponding licensing fees are making such compilations cost-prohibitive. As a result, some established funk compilers are now exploring other forms of music, while others like DJ Florian Keller are focusing on contemporary artists recording in a throwback style.
So the second volume of his Party-Keller set, subtitled Sons And Daughters Of Funk, Boogie, Soulful Reggae And Afrobeat, forgoes the killer forgotten classics of the past for similar-sounding grooves created by the Baker Brothers , Natural Self , Orgone , Sidewinder , the Pan-Atlantics , Sarah Winton and Travis Blaque .
No doubt some people will recognize the closing track, Unconditional Love, by Toronto's own JackSoul , which turns out to be a highlight, along with the ingenius overhaul of DJ Shadow's Organ Donor, by Lefties Soul Connection . Nice.
Yet more Nostalgia 77
Evidently, releasing the Borderlands and Impossible Equation albums in 2006 along with various 12-inch EPs isn't enough for Nostalgia 77 , so the prolific Brighton-based members of the Tru Thoughts sample-funk-crew-turned-jazz-orchestra have set up their own Invisible Ark label to put out even more stuff.
One of the first two releases is The Way Things Were, by the Examples of Twelves , a project led by N77 bassist Riaan Vosloo , bolstering his jazz octet with a string quartet for a sound that favourably recalls Neil Ardley's work with the New Jazz Orchestra circa Greek Variations but adds a spiritual Strata-East vibe.
Slightly more uptempo and club-friendly is The Coast Is Clear - boasting an inspired cover of I Shot The Sheriff - by the Plumstead Radical Club , a swinging quartet led by N77 trombonist Trevor Mires . Both vinyl releases are strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide, so don't sleep. www.impossiblearkrecords.co.uk.
Precious Stones Throw
When most labels release sampler discs to promote what their talented artists have been working on, it's very often the case that the songs are annoyingly either already available elsewhere or will be shortly.
No such problem with Stones Throw 's new Chrome Children CD/DVD, which packs 19 tracks of solid previously unissued material from Madlib , Oh No , J Dilla , Madvillain , MED , Percee P and Dudley Perkins , who are all topped by amazing new joints from Koushik and Guilty Simpson .
As a bonus, they've thrown in a full-length concert DVD featuring MF Doom and Madlib , but if that's not enough, there's also a free Peanut Butter Wolf mix CD version circulating around in which Wolf cuts in Oh No's anthemic WTF instrumental, Jaylib 's dope remix of Quasimoto 's Hydrant Game and an untititled Diamond D collabo with Percee P .
Speaking of Percee P, Play de Record has a few copies of a picture-disc single version of the badass Madlib-twerked Raw Heat with an insane instro mix on the flip. Join Percee P, Madlib, PB Wolf and posse in toasting 10 great years of Stones Throw at the Phoenix Monday (October 30).
