Far Out Braziliance
Now that Joe Davis has helped re-energize the careers of Brazilian greats Marcos Valle, Azymuth and Os Ipanemas, he's trying to work his Far Out magic on Deodato protege Antonio Adolfo and underappreciated visionary Arthur Verocai . Along with being the label boss, Davis is also a record collector who knows that Adolfo peaked with Brazuca, so it makes sense that Adolfo is reunited with a Fender Rhodes for Destiny ( Far Out ) and his daughters Carol and Luisa are enlisted to provide the sweet harmonizing up front on a set of easy, breezy jams that recall his best Brazuca work.
Similarly, Davis knows that Verocai's formidable skills as a guitarist and composer are matched by his innovative arrangements, and on Encore ( Far Out ), he wisely gives the maestro a free hand to make the best use of an exceptional support cast that includes members of Azymuth and legendary singer Ivan Lins . Two warmly soulful recordings that may surprise those who thought no one was making Brazilian music that feels this good any more. www.faroutrecordings.com .
Long before the Numero Group released a Capsoul singles retrospective in their popular Eccentric Soul series, the Capsoul label's lone album release, Gently Down Your Stream, by the Four Mints , was a sought-after item for fans of group harmony and those with a taste for the sweeter side of Southern soul.
And collectors of cool sleeve art couldn't pass up such a dope-ass cover shot of the Minty men in their matching powder-blue flared stage finery incongruously lounging on some rocks, which explains why copies never turn up.
Thankfully for the rest of us, the Numero boys have decided to launch their new Asterisk sub-label -- dedicated to recirculating amazing overlooked indie albums -- with the fab Four Mints obscurity in a beautiful gatefold mini-LP sleeve edition with two extra rehearsal takes and an instrumental version of In A Rut.
Also in Asterisk's first wave is the self-titled folk rock thriller from Colorado's Propinquity , with four solid bonus tracks, and the lost sloppy pop artifact Appetizer/Soup's On, by Hartford, Connecticut's Johnny Lunchbreak , both available digitally for the first time. www.numerogroup.com .
Eleni en français
Considering how enthusiastically audiences in Montreal and Paris respond to performances by torchy Los Angeles chanteuse Eleni Mandell , she was bound to record en français to meet public demand sooner or later.
It turns out that a planned concert swing through Quebec in October provided the perfect excuse to put those FSL skills to use in a Montreal studio, and the result is a sexy-fine tour single for the Bonsound label. Français 1 is a charming duet with
Melomane 's Pierre de Gaillande à la Serge Gainsbourg and Anna Karina, b ut the real business here is the swinging Dis-Moi Au Revoir Encore, which Mandell originally wrote for her rowdy new wave combo the Grabs. C'est magnifique! www.bonsound. com , www.myspace.com/elenimandell .
