Phedre, Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, TOPS and what to see at NXNE on Friday

Here’s a list of shows you should be seeing Friday night at NXNE.

Yamantaka//Sonic Titan Ok, we admit that performance art/doom metal/Noh opera/Asian pop/noise rock/drone music seems like something you might hate, but trust us when we say that Yamantaka//Sonic Titan are much easy to enjoy than they sound on paper. They play the Garrison tonight at midnight. See listing.

Phedre This collaboration between Doldrums and Hooded Fang has resulted in some disturbing yet sensual videos, a great album and some truly opulent/surreal live shows. Will Phedre go all-out again tonight at Sneaky Dee’s at midnight? See listing.

Reigning Sound Do you like garage rock? Then you should be checking out Reigning Sound at the Horseshoe tonight at 1 am. See listing.

The Provincial Archive Edmonton’s the Provincial Archive combine banjos and computer trickery, and recently toured the Provincial Archives of Alberta (the band name came first). They play the Painted Lady tonight at 11 pm. See listing.

Friends Brooklyn hipsters making hip dance pop encompasses a lot of crap, but Friends are much more promising than most. They play Lee’s Palace tonight at 11 pm. See listing.

DIIV I know you’re probably sick of Brooklyn post-shoegazer bands, but DIIV are actually really good, and unlike many, they’re actually good live. They play Lee’s Palace tonight at 10 pm. See listing.

Bass Drum Of Death As far as we know, Bass Drum Of Death are the only garage rock duo to collaborate with OFWGKTA. They play tonight at Wrongbar at 10 pm, and also an unofficial NXNE gig earlier at El Gordo’s backyard.

TOPS There’s lots of weird pop coming from Montreal these days, and TOPS are one of the better acts. They play the Silver Dollar tonight at 1 am. See listing.

Brasstronaut Vancouver’s Brasstronaut are jazzier than your average indie band, as you may have guessed from their name. They play the Gladstone tonight at midnight. See listing.

2:54 Do you miss 90s alt rock? Maybe you’ll be into the moody guitar pop of 2:54, who play Lee’s Palace tonight at 9 pm. See listing.

B L A C K I E Somewhere between classic hardcore and rap is B L A C K I E, and he brings a new intensity to the term DIY. He plays his second of two NXNE gigs tonight at the Velvet Underground at 9 pm. See listing.
