The Foot Prints party in the Rivoli 's back room Saturday was packed with people going crazy for Latin-jazz-inspired beats. This little night started off strong last year and doesn't seem to have lost any momentum. Almost everyone in the room was dancing, and the no-smoking policy makes the crowd and the heat easier to deal with.
DJ Stuart was killing it as we came in, clearly having a great time feeding off the energy in the room. Jason Palma and General Eclectic took the stage later. They've put together a Foot Prints promo mix that they were hawking at the party - something more promoters should be doing to keep their crowd loyal.
Garage gets warehouse vibe
Garage 416 have scaled back their monthly soulful house parties recently, concentrating more on local talent. Last Saturday they hosted Nick Holder at Bauhaus , which is where they used to throw these parties years ago. The space is a lot more intimate than Roxy Blu , their main venue for the past few years until a deal to buy the club turned sour.
Holder turned in a great set and got a strong reaction from the hometown crowd. At 2 am, he and Kevin Williams played back-to-back until the bar closed, resurrecting that old-school warehouse vibe. The whole room was dancing and everyone was smiling, so maybe big isn't necessarily better.
Decided to check out Tangerine 's regular night on Friday, featuring DJ Moreno (aka Hotstepper's Pedro Mondesir ), and was met with apologies that it wasn't busier. Not that it was dead either, but they've been used to consistent crowds each week. It was still a lot of fun, and we got a bit of dancing in before last call. Coming up in the next few months, the Hotstepper team opens another club just around the corner in the space most recently known as Savannah Lounge. Tentatively called Tangiers, it will eventually host the bigger Garage 416 and Bump N' Hustle events as well as other parties with similarly rootsy vibes.
System's system set to improve
System Soundbar regulars will have noticed ongoing renovations at the after-hours club, which will be closed for most of next week so they can be completed. The anticipated upgrades include a new sound system, which some speculate comes in response to the hype behind the pristine and powerful system at Boa-Redux . Hope they're dealing with the right people, because their old system was legendarily painful and noisy. email@example.com
