Radiohead to play Toronto for the first time since 2012 stage collapse: Just announced shows

Plus: the sorta-reunited Smashing Pumpkins play the Air Canada Centre, Electric Island dates announced, and more

Radiohead are returning to Toronto for the first time since the 2012 stage collapse at Downsview Park that killed their drum tech, Scott Johnson.

Though the English art rock band hasn’t played here in almost a decade, their name has been a constant in news headlines. Charges were initially brought against promoter Live Nation, along with Optex Staging and engineer Domenic Cugliari, but a judge stayed the charges this past September, ruling that the right to a timely trial had been violated. “Words utterly fail me,” Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke tweeted at the time.

The story is still ongoing, as Ontario’s chief coroner is opening up an inquest into Johnson’s death.

Rumours have swirled that Radiohead would not play Toronto until the case was settled. With the latest tour announcement, however, we now know they’ll be back July 19 and 20 at the Air Canada Centre.

This year’s concerts extend the band’s tour for their 2016 album A Moon Shaped Pool and will be the first time a local audience has seen them since 2008’s In Rainbows. That means there will be a lot of new material to draw from, which might keep the Creep requests to a minimum.

Notably, the shows are being promoted by Goldenvoice, not Live Nation.

July 19-20 at Air Canada Centre (40 Bay). $79.50-$99.50. On sale February 24.
