R.I.P. Chris Levoir

Chris Levoir, lead singer of local band the Mark Inside, died last weekend of unknown causes.

Originally from Whitby, Levoir was a sound engineer at the Great Hall in addition to his bandleader duties. The Mark Inside were supposed to celebrate the release their third album – Dark Hearts Can Radiate White Light – on July 4. Levoir was 31. Still loving the crew?

Is Drake and the Weeknd’s OVOXO collabo donezo? After multiple joint efforts including Crew Love, The Zone and Trust Issues, it appears that the loving relationship that helped make the Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, a breakout R&B star might be over.

Trouble may have started when the Weeknd signed with Universal Republic in September and not Drake’s OVO imprint. The Weeknd is notably absent from Drake’s annual OVO Fest bill (but musical peers James Blake and Frank Ocean have signed on). The XO acronym has also been dropped from all OVOXO clothing and branding, leaving OVO all by its lonesome.

And we can’t help but notice that Diddy’s courting the usually reclusive Tesfaye pretty hard – the two have been seen partying together in New York City and Miami.

If Drake doesn’t show at the Weeknd’s just-announced Mod Club show June 13 (we have it on good authority he’ll be in town), we’ll know it’s over. Forget Rachel and Ryan. If this is real, it’s the Canadian breakup we’re saddest about.

Musicians take aim at Rob Ford

Local musicians have taken to their instruments to protest our allegedly crack-cocaine-smoking mayor.

Geriatric punk band SFH have a new single and video entitled Mayor On Crack.

Choice Lyrics: “We’ve got a mayor on crack. We wanna give him the sack. He makes us all want to yack. We’ve got a mayor on crack.”

Meanwhile, Betti Forde of electro/hip-hop duo Stinkmitt has collaborated with Peaches and Joel Gibb on Bored Of Rob Ford.

Choice Lyrics: “Put your hands in the air if you’re sick of the mayor, and if you love Toronto I wanna see you care. We can make this bullshit stop, but if we don’t then we’re all fucked. Racism, sexism, DUIs – homophobia and lies, lies, lies!”
