Toronto-based deep house dj/producer Andy Roberts is a bit more patient than most artists, maybe because he started his career as a teenager almost 20 years ago. He isn't worried about putting his label, Mixed Signals Music, on hiatus for the last year.
"We had some problems with the pressing plant and the distributors, so instead of trying to focus on new releases, I spent the last year concentrating on events and building the brand of the label. We're getting more exposure internationally doing events than putting out music, so there's no rush right now."
Indeed, every time they bring in a big out-of-town name to play, the rest of the worldwide house community finds out about it on the Internet, which helps keep the Toronto scene on the radar internationally.
"As un-Toronto as it sounds, I'm all about getting Toronto out there. Why shouldn't this city be better known? We've got so many clubs and so many people doing stuff, but they're all doing it on their own. If everybody got together and pushed, maybe someone like Martino could get to DJ out of town three nights a month."
To this end, Roberts has planned a bunch of events in the next few months, including a boat cruise with soulful house icons Blaze. He'll also be reviving the label, with new releases slated for the end of the summer.
