Rock around the Blockorama

There’s tons of great music all over Pride, but one of the more unusual events is the annual Blockorama stage. Hosted by Blackness Yes!, it provides a showcase for the often overlooked black queer community. Tensions over how Pride was treating the event this year appear to have been resolved, and the all-day party is back at George Hislop Park. (Initially, it looked like they were being moved to the smaller Alexander Parkette.)

Musically, you can expect DJs playing everything from hip-hop to soca to house, alongside live music and hilarious drag performances. Look for Montreal deep house DJ jojoflores, eclectic beats by local hero DJ Blackcat, surreal soul with talented vocalist Saidah Baba Talibah and many more.

Those concerned about Pride censoring Queers Against Israeli Apartheid will be glad to know the Blockorama team have resolved to meet their Pride commitments, yes, but also to bring censorship issues to the stage.

• Blockorama, Sunday (July 4), George Hislop Park (Charles and Isabella), noon to 10 pm. pridetoronto.com.
