Snow storm

MIIKE SNOW with MADRID at Supermarket (268 Augusta), Friday (June 5), 10 pm. $10. ticketweb.ca.

Discussing his Miike Snow project, Andrew Wyatt makes a surprising analogy for a born-and-raised New Yorker starting a heady electronic pop band in Stockholm.

“Playing in a band is like surfing,” he says. “The little things that throw you off balance can cause you to eat it. Or you can get your shit together and keep riding it out.”

Wyatt, along with the group’s other two members, Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, is stoked to turn Miike from studio entity into live band. The trio decided to work together in 2004 after bonding over a shared love of black metal, though the project didn’t get rolling until 2007.

On their recently released self-titled debut, Wyatt contributes melodies and lyrics, while Karlsson and Winnberg, Swedish studio aces known for their work with Britney Spears on the Toxic single and others, handle the meticulous production.

“Those guys haven’t really blown themselves up in terms of [becoming known to] average listeners, and that’s to their great credit,” says Wyatt.

“I don’t think any of us have a high opinion of going out there and hiring a publicist so you can blow up as a producer. It’s all about what you’re able to do in the studio. Our emphasis was, and is, on making music and leaving our profile in a very distant fifth, sixth or seventh place.”
