SONICS at Dundas Square. Sat, June 20. nxne.com Rating: NNN

What an amazing coup for fest organizers to land the Sonics and then to courageously give the proto-punks top billing at Dundas on Saturday. Considering the Tacomo combo are legends amongst rock and punk diehards, though mostly obscure to the general public, it was somewhat of a gamble.

Despite adverse weather conditions the show went off mostly without a hitch.

But some might argue the Sonics, with their catalogue of bar room cult classics like Witch and Have Love Will Travel, aren’t the ideal festival amphitheatre band since much of their power felt lost with the open surroundings and public space volume levels. Hearing guitarist Larry Parypa’s genuine fuzz rumble was a rare treat nonetheless, not to mention the spectacle of seeing half the Toronto rock scene hanging out in Dundas Square.
