Sta (aka Stu Freen) went from DJing a college radio show in Kingston to significant buzz based mainly on raw, edgy bootleg remixes of pop songs that got spread all over the world thanks to the blog network.
Inspired by people like Alan Braxe, Soulwax and the output of labels like Kitsuné, he's stumbled into a fun and funky take on the electro house sounds dominating clubs.
Last year he was signed to breakbeat icon Adam Freeland's Marine Parade label, which put out his In Living Colour 12-inch and will also release his follow-up later this year.
WHO'S DROPPING HIS TRACKS
He's been getting love from some of the hottest new-school DJs, including Busy P, Guns N' Bombs, LA Riots and Bag Raiders.
WHAT HE SOUNDS LIKE
"Boombox beats, sliced up vocals and big fuzzy bass lines."
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR TORONTO'S SCENE TO BLOW UP LARGE
"There's a ton of talent and potential in Toronto dance music right now. I think it just needs to percolate a bit more and then we'll start hearing some amazing music coming out. All it takes is one or two hit songs to start something big."
