Timbaland in the 6?

Social media rumour of the week: Promiscuous and Maneater producer Timbaland is reportedly due in town to record at a “secret studio,” according to a Facebook status by Bonjay singer Alanna Stuart, who apparently ascertained this A-list R&B gossip while patronizing an unidentified gelato/quinoa joint. Naturally.


Junos to The Weeknd: Girl, you er-er-earned it

R&B heartthrob about town The Weeknd was among the Toronto winners to score trophies at the 2015 Juno Awards. The artist also known as Abel Tesfaye won artist of the year and R&B/soul recording of the year for his song Often.

Other Torontonians who let host city Hamilton know what time it is were Adam Messinger (producer of the year), Eric Ratz (recording engineer), July Talk (for alternative album), Arkells (for rock album and best group), Bahamas (for songwriter and adult alternative album), Lights (for pop album), Naturally Born Strangers (for rap recording), Jane Bunnett and Maqueque (for jazz album), to name but a few.


NOW @ SXSW

Intrepid NOW correspondent Jules Hollett will brave the celebrity handlers and viral marketing schemes at SXSW in Austin this week. Local talents playing the annual music, film and interactive fest include Crosss, Metz, BadBadNotGood (with Ghostface Killah), Rochelle Jordan, July Talk and Tasha the Amazon. Dakota Tavern heads to P.E.C.

Shawn Creamer and Shannon Kohlmeier, owners of local bluegrass brunch hot spot the Dakota Tavern, have taken over Prince Edward County’s Hayloft Dancehall. Located at 344 Salmon Point Road in Cherry Valley, the 47-year-old venue will host local and touring blues, roots, country and rock acts as well as private functions. Elliott Brood are booked for the May 15 opening-night launch, and the Strumbellas play May 22.


Ad-Rock joins Luminato lineup

Beastie Boy Ad-Rock and Beastie Boy producer Money Mark have signed up for David Byrne‘s Contemporary Color extravaganza. The show, debuting at the ACC on June 22 and 23 as part of Luminato, pairs pop artists like Nelly Furtado, Dev Hynes, Kelis and St. Vincent with high school colour guard teams. The Beast will team with Somerville High School. Brooklyn band Lucius has also joined the bill.
