Tanya Tagaq wins the Polaris Prize 2014

Tanya Tagaq took this year’s 2014 Polaris Prize for her album Animism.

The throat singer won the $30,000 prize after delivering a moving, unnerving performance dedicated to missing indigenous women at the show tonight at the Carlu.

Fellow nominees Drake, YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN and Timber Timbre were unable to perform, but Mac DeMarco stunned with a lounge-y version of Still Together (off of his album 2 and not Salad Days, which was nominated), and Jessy Lanza’s mom adorably introduced her segment of the show. Owen Pallett, Shad and Basia Bulat also played selections from their nominated records.

Goon and This Is The End actor Jay Baruchel played host, while Vish Khanna entertained the web audience with interviews off stage.
