TEAM ROBESPIERRE at Wrongbar. Fri, June 19. nxne.com Rating: NNN
If you strip away the electronic backing tracks, there’s not much to distinguish Brooklyn’s Team Robespierre from any of the legions of interchangeable pop punk bands of the late-90s. On record you don’t notice this as much, but onstage the cranked-up guitars make that aspect much more evident. Their bouncy enthusiasm is contagious, and the crowd was suitably rowdy and shouting along to every knuckle-headed chorus, but there’s not a lot of depth or variety to their formula. Definitely fun, but too light to ever approach mind-blowing.
