THE COAST at the Horseshoe (368 Queen West), Thursday (June 12), 9 pm. $20, free w/ NXNE wristband (see page 62). 416-598-4226. Rating: NNNNN
Inspired by retro guitar sounds from both sides of the Atlantic, the Coast have been busy making 2008 their breakout year. So far the Toronto-based rockers have completed a six-week North American tour, played four South By Southwest showcases, taped a show for MTV Live and released their debut LP, Expatriate, to a wall of online buzz. All that and it’s only June.
Up next, the quartet will be releasing a 7-inch single for their song Tightrope in the U.S. and Canada on Davy Love’s Magnificent Sevens label (featuring a b-side remix by friends and fans Tokyo Police Club) and dropping a UK-only EP in the fall. They’ll be following these up with a month-long European tour and a showcase at NYC’s CMJ in October. The band is also slated to play this summer’s Edgefest, making them one of the only decent acts on that bill. Their NXNE showcase is the perfect opportunity to catch their bittersweet melodies and thoughtful lyrics in a great-sounding room.
