The return of the Inbreds

THE INBREDS at Lee’s Palace, Saturday, March 24. Rating: NNNNN

Nineties indie-pop innovators the Inbreds were overwhelmed by the warm response they got from the crowd at Lee’s, and no wonder: it’s been seven years since the reunited fuzzy bass and drums duo has played Toronto.

Drummer Dave Ullrich acted as band historian in between songs while singer/songwriter Mike O’Neill wielded his bass much like a regular guitar, complete with rock’n’roll moves (he plays with a capo and a distortion pedal at the ready).

Fans sang along word for word to material spanning all four Inbreds albums and fellow Oshawan Wayne Petti (Cuff The Duke) came up for North Window, off It’s Sydney Or The Bush.

Despite the time constraints of CMW, the Inbreds gave a brief encore (Ullrich was wearing a white, caped Elvis suit) with the two switching roles for a song before closing with Amelia Earhart. An exultant set.
